Retired 1SG Walter M. McAfee, Sr., was born on June 8, 1945, in Hallettsville, Texas, to the late Cunnie and Gracie McAfee.

After the death of his parents, he was also reared by Rev. Oliver and Mrs. Ara B. Murray of El Campo, Texas. Walter accepted Christ into his life at an early age. He enlisted in The United States Army, and was later married to the late Otha C. Gardley, for 10 years. He served in the U.S. Army for 22 years, and fought in the Vietnam War. Walter received The Bronze Star Award among other distinctions while serving. After retiring from the U.S. Army, he began a career with the U.S. Postal service, from which he later retired.

Walter became actively involved at The Shoreline Church in Austin, Texas. While there he served as an Usher for a period of time. He married again later in life to the late Grace Zavala (Chris) for 5 years. Walter had a passion for life, family and Volkswagens. It became a family tradition that each of his children's first car had to be a Volkswagen. He enjoyed restoring Karmann Ghias, and could be found under the hood of one most days. Walter loved his family and friends dearly and always put others before himself, demonstrating his selfless heart. He was a man of integrity, character and love.

Walter is preceded in death by his parents, Cunnie and Gracie, his son Garrieth J. McAfee, his brothers, Cunnie and Willie McAfee and a sister Mardell Newton.
Left to cherish his memories are his two children; Walter M. McAfee, Jr. (Angel) of Sanger, Texas, Natasha S. Rockmore (Antoine, Sr.) of Midland, Georgia; daughter-in-law, Regina McAfee, the wife of the late Garrieth J. McAfee, of Pflugerville, Texas; nine grandchildren Tatjana, Walter III, Antoine Jr., Isabella, Michael, Shawna, Benjamin, Garren and Adrian; three great grandchildren, Michael III, Jazmyn and Haven; four siblings Manuel McAfee (Gwen) of Beaumont, Texas, Fred McAfee (Linda) of Victoria, Texas, Curtis McAfee Sr., of Hallettsville, Texas, Myrtle Lemons of Hallettsville, Texas, and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Walter will be remembered by his Army stories, jokes, and smile, but most of all, by his wisdom and love.

Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. until 9:00 p.m. on Friday, September 15, 2017 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, September 16, 2017 at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Funeral Home Chapel; interment will follow at Cook-Walden/Capital Parks Cemetery in Pflugerville, Texas.
